A boundary describes what you will participate in and what you will do when a limit is crossed. Begin with a specific situation and an action within your control. You can invite cooperation without needing permission for your own limit, and without claiming authority over your partner's friendships or choices.
Make the limit small enough to understand
Instead of saying that everything must change, identify the moment that is difficult: receiving repeated calls during work, for example. State when you can respond and what you will do during that period. A clear boundary lets the other person understand the arrangement. It does not require a long case proving that your need is more reasonable than theirs.
Distinguish your response from controlling their behavior
Saying that you will pause a conversation when shouting starts is different from forbidding your partner to feel angry. Your response should be possible for you to carry out and proportionate to the situation. Avoid consequences you do not intend to follow. If stating an ordinary limit brings intimidation, prioritize support and safety rather than searching for a more persuasive sentence.
Practice the sentence before the difficult moment

Write a short statement describing the situation and your response, then choose a calm time to say it. You can acknowledge disappointment without withdrawing a limit that still matters to you.
Questions you might have
Is a boundary the same as an ultimatum?
A boundary focuses on your participation and a response you can carry out. An ultimatum often aims to force a particular choice. The wording matters less than the purpose and practical effect.
What if my partner dislikes my limit?
Disappointment does not automatically make the limit unfair. Listen to the concern, check whether your response is workable, and decide whether an adjustment would preserve the need you are protecting.
